Asbestos Surveying
The HSE produced a standard method for the conduct of asbestos surveys. This will provide guidance both for the building owner and the surveyor. This is now been adopted into HSE MDHS 100. BC Combined Services Ltd carry out all surveys in accordance with this document.
There are three types of survey:
- Type 1 Survey
- This survey visually locates the presence, nature and extent of the asbestos in the building. No samples are taken to verify the status of the asbestos. Suspicious materials are either presumed or strongly presumed to be asbestos containing.
- Type 2 Survey
- The procedures used are the same as for Survey Type 1, but with the addition that representative samples are collected and analysed for the presence of asbestos in a UKAS accredited laboratory.
- Type 3 Survey (primarily pre-demolition or pre-refurbishment)
- A Type 3 survey locates and defines all asbestos containing materials in the building as is reasonably practicable and may involve destructive inspection techniques. The survey is usually undertaken prior to any refurbishment or demolition works and requires that the intended areas to be surveyed must be unoccupied.
